A Common Social Media Occurrence Has People Worried.

Lately it seems as if every other week there is a day dedicated towards a social media site being ‘down’. What does that mean? That people are not able to scan through their daily feeds, and those people — get mad. The most recent day to see this trend was today, July 3rd. This time it took three sites down.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp all experienced outages around the world. With outages mainly taking place in the Eastern United States, some parts of Europe and South America were also hit. This news coming from Down Detector, which tracks the outage of each platform. Each social media site gave trouble to users whether it be scrolling through the feed or posting content.

Users of these sites went directly to Twitter to voice their opinions, as one does. Many were commenting on how Instagram seems to not be working a lot recently, and others brought up how all three social networking sites were owned by the same company. These people shared their thoughts that when everything is run by the same company, there is no control over the maintenance of the sites.

Social media sites continuously being down is not good for a lot of people, especially businesses. Company’s that use social media to promote and communicate with consumers could end up losing a daily profit. A lot of stores receive their income after a user comes across an ad for them on a social media app. As shallow as it sounds, social media is how many people stay in contact with others, whether it be through checking on someone’s profile or instant messaging. Without that constant communication, people start to feel isolated from one another.

If the reason the sites are crashing has to do with all of them being connected by the ownership, people will start to worry that once Facebook starts buying more sites, it won’t be able to handle managing multiple social media platforms.
