Story 19 of 100

Everything was ready, and in place. Everyone was ready. Well, most everyone. Bree was still whining a bit.

“I just don’t see why we have to do it today.”

“Bree, don’t be such a baby!” Jessica said. She wanted to scream, and slap Bree, but other than Jennifer, Bree was her oldest friend, and screaming was not going to help. Slapping was only going to help her feel better, not Bree. Jennifer was also glaring at Bree, and if Bree wasn’t going to stop soon, Jennifer actually was going to slap her, and then this long-awaited and long-planned night was going to be wasted. Jessica was not going to have her plans thwarted, not again, not coming so close.

“Look, it has to be tonight. Remember, it has to be on Friday the thirteenth, we’ve talked about it. Please, please, don’t chicken out now. I know you’re as curious as we are, just be brave a little bit longer, ok?”

Bree took a deep and shuddering breath and nodded her head. She was curious and she was scared that Jennifer was going to slap her. “Okay. Let’s do it,” she said, and was rewarded with large, toothy smiles from both Jessica and Jennifer.

They all easily fit into the spacious bathroom. Apartment bathrooms aren’t really this large, Jennifer thought, except if both of your parents are doctors, like Jessica’s are. And even then, they weren’t living on the very top floor — that was occupied by an even richer couple, one floor up. But it wasn’t bad — not at all — this was the bathroom off of Jessica’s parents’ bedroom suite. It had two marble sinks, a huge tub on clawed feet, next to a large standing glass-enclosed shower. Jennifer wondered if Jessica would go to medical school like her parents. Or would Jessica just continue to be a social media influencer. She might be even more successful if this ritual would actually work.

The camera was running. The black candles were lit, the mirror was decorated with just the right pentagrams and symbols, straight from the books, drawn on with black soap. The salt circle on the floor was now complete.

Jennifer turned the lights off. Bree immediately asked, “Do we have to have all the lights off?”

“Yes!” both Jennifer and Jessica hissed at her at the same time.
