Education English Writing Sample

My passion for the English Language began at a young age. I loved learning about all of the rules and exceptions to those rules. The English Language is so complex and evolving that there is always something new to learn. I also enjoyed creative writing and often spent hours creating my own stories. As a child, I was fascinated by words in English, and I am also interested in the creative aspects of writing and how writers use language to create meaning. English is an essential language for international communication. It has become the language of the world, and all people should learn it to improve communication. English is a beautiful language. It is used to educate, administer, write laws, trade, and conduct diplomacy.

English is a language native to the United Kingdom, spoken in the early Middle Ages, and has become the most widely used language today. It is spoken as a first language by most of the population in several countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and many Caribbean nations. More people have learned it as a second language, the official language of almost 60 sovereign states. After Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, it is the world’s third most prevalent native language.

In recent years, the importance of English as a second language has come to the forefront. For students to excel in their studies, they need to have a firm grasp of English. Most elementary, secondary, and tertiary courses are taught in English. Because of this, students who do not have a strong command of the language often struggle in school.

One way learners can improve their English is by using a language laboratory. The Language Laboratory offers a complete, result-oriented, efficient way to enrich the English Language learning process. The learners (including students and teachers) are exposed to various language-learning activities in the lab that help them learn the language more effectively. The lab also allows the students to interact with each other and practice their language skills.

I have always enjoyed English throughout school, which was encouraged and nurtured at the elementary level. My favorite genre as a child was fiction, as I loved to be transported to different worlds through stories. This love for literature has stayed with me throughout my life and has led me to study English at the university. I think one of the reasons I was so drawn to writing during my secondary school years was because I could explore different facets of the language. For example, I could create characters out of nothing and bestow upon them personal qualities, which gave me a sense of freedom, further fuelling my interest as I became fully involved in writing, debating, and presenting reports in morning assembly sessions. This experience increased my confidence in working with younger pupils and reinforced my innate feeling that I would make an excellent English teacher.

My most fulfilling achievement in secondary school was becoming the head of the school’s literary and debating club for year four students and bringing home a trophy from every of our debating competitions. Involving a small group of students, planning, scheduling debating class sessions, agreeing on rules with the members, and supervising them became some of the significant challenges I faced as a child. As an adult, I get pleasure from different writing styles. Recently I have enjoyed books written by people from other cultures, such as Khaled Hosseini, whose book “The Kite Runner” profoundly affected me. The opportunity to inspire this passion for reading in the younger generation is one that I would find greatly rewarding.

Drama was also essential to me throughout my primary and secondary education. Performing in front of an audience of people, most notably at the school’s cultural day celebrations, helped develop my communication proficiency and imparted my outgoing personality.

Having completed some weeks’ experience in an elementary school during my GCSE years, I found working as part of a team and individually with children most gratifying. The reward was enabling young people to enjoy books, as I had throughout my childhood. “Buddy reading” with primary five pupils on a one-to-one basis encouraged them to improve their reading skills. Together we improved their reading ability and better understood and interpreted the plot. The pupils commented that they felt the stories come alive due to reading together, which gave me a sense of fulfillment.

I entered the university confident that I wanted to be an English major because of my love of literature. The English courses I took not only introduced me to many works of literature and challenged my analytical skills but also inspired my passion for this subject. The more I read and analyzed, the more I wanted to know.

Studying English has further enabled my analytical thinking of general education, professional education, and English content (literature, linguistics, and writing). It has sharpened my writing skills and knowledge and helped me to evaluate written materials according to grammatical structure, composition, and linguistic principles.

While at the university as an undergraduate, most extracurricular activities demonstrate my aptitude for English. I was the coordinator of the university’s writers club; I wrote articles for the school’s magazine and organized the writer’s challenge: an avenue where students get to showcase their writing prowess. Responsible for my group, I assigned roles for each, guiding them to success. These activities required much effort and hard work, but seeing the end performances made it a rewarding experience.

Furthermore, I participated in a peer mentoring group, which enabled younger peers to seek advice from older peers, such as myself, and have someone to talk to. During one of my peer mentorship sessions, I was privileged to assist a younger student in his second year who had difficulty engaging in personal reading as he finds it uninteresting. However, he happened to be a brilliant young fellow but would find it hard to get himself to sit and study alone, and this, in turn, is beginning to affect his grades and CGPA. I assisted him in improving and gearing his interest towards personal study by helping him develop a personal reading timetable and following a simple study method known as SQ3R: survey, question, read, recite, and review. This study method helped him so well, as he not only fell in love with studying alone but also put him ahead in his department as a naturally brilliant young man. Being able to help people is a feeling that deeply satisfies me.

Although some would argue that studying for an English education degree is not vocational, I see the next few years of my life as the opportunity to become immersed in a subject I love and impact the same knowledge in the younger generation. Thus, public speaking, and creative writing, once an alien trait, is now my second nature, whether it be voicing my opinion or demonstrating a product. This attribute will significantly help my competence in becoming a successful English teacher.

The reason I am interested in studying English is not only that I have the chance to expand my literary knowledge but also the opportunity to express my thoughts and ideas in writing. I love how writers can communicate their opinions and emotions to influence, inspire, and touch others. For this reason, creative writing appeals to me so much as I can express myself freely on paper, and I find writing to be a valuable and therapeutic way of conveying my emotions.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in English education so far. I enjoy learning and being inspired by a challenge. I also apply what I learn from lessons in the English language to improve my speech and grammar, keeping to the language rules (avoiding doubles negatives). However, with this said, I am not an advocate for pedantry and would never seek to “go after” another individual’s way of speaking.

Coming from a family where my parents were school teachers, I have been brought up to continue to be aware of the good but sometimes challenging aspects of their jobs. This has allowed me to achieve an objective view of education; therefore, I can make an informed decision on this path of impacting younger people’s lives.

I have always found pleasure in writing creatively. Literature has played a significant role in my life, inspiring me to pursue English further as a means of enhancing my writing and expanding my knowledge of a subject that I have found to be fascinating. I am enthusiastic about all my studies and have decided to continue with a master’s degree in a field I have found enthralling.

So far, in the world of work, I have had several positions in different sectors — some unchallenging and most unrewarding. Searching for a perfect post has been stressful, making me more determined to work in the right career. Far from cocksure, I was able to build my self-confidence and explore deeper into the English teaching world. My communication skills have immensely improved throughout my time at college, and I believe it is my indestructible trait. I have received praise from several teachers and colleagues who comment on my “projective voice” and how I speak with clarity. I am conscientious, sensitive, committed, available, and eager to begin my next adventure through life in English education.

I still feel a purist attraction to learning subjects in-depth and comprehensibly and deeply resonates with my chosen topics. I believe this university can provide the satisfaction I am looking for, and I, in turn, will bring appreciation and humility with me.
