MY JOURNEY INTO TECH

I had recently just graduated from Statistics department in 2015 and was so confused about the next step to take as regards my future asides having to wait to be called up for national service.

I never really fancied programming, talk more of pursuing a career in it. While in school, I mostly just read the borrowed computer science courses to pass, complete my credit load and be free from them.

Towards 2016 ending, my younger brother informed me about a tech internship that was to be held remotely and required zero prior knowledge of any programming concept before being accepted. That internship was hotels.ng (HNG) internship.

I registered, got accepted and I began my journey. I was completely lost and couldn’t find direction because I was a novice in entirety. I ended up in a seeming chaotic environment, further deepening my lost state coupled with me having to take turns sharing my brother’s pc.

There was no way I would’ve survived the heat as that was the first time I had such exposure.

Long story short, I got evicted from the program after the first few stages. This was so because, as the internship progressed, there was an increasing demand of expertise for survival, a skill I didn’t possess at that time.

This time, though I was at liberty to learn at my own pace, I still had the challenge of not owning a personal computer, so I had to place my learning on hold.

During my service year in 2017, I saved up money and when I POP’d, I finally got my own laptop.

One day, while surfing my social media pages, I stumbled on a post from Andela calling for applications for ALC 4.0, I was excited and I applied for the Mobile Web Services track but since I couldn’t keep up with the deadlines, I got evicted from the program.

I took a break from learning how to code and dedicated a greater portion of my day job-hunting so I could take care of my bills.

In 2018 through 2019, I started a business centre where I registered job seekers for online job applications and also performed other secretarial duties in exchange for money. I was really fascinated by the different websites I came across in the course of registering applicants. This re-ignited my passion to learn how to code again.

In 2020, I started looking out for internships where I could sign up for, then I came upon a post calling for applications for people with zero knowledge in programming to apply for training, that’s how I signed up for the Genesys Tech hub virtual training. I also signed up at Start NG to learn Python for backend development, though I was later evicted at stage 4, I signed up again for HNGi7, progressed to stage 4 and was evicted again.

Then I got a mail from Genesys Tech hub notifying me of my success in the application I made for a virtual internship with them. That’s how I got here.

I am grateful for the opportunity offered by Genesys especially for the fact that everything is outlined and there’s a curriculum to follow in a space of 6months.

This is the structured environment I wanted with a little push and I am glad it was offered to me by Genesys. I hope to make the most of it.
