Digital privacy and our lives

Digital privacy is really important because “Privacy is an important right and an essential enabler of an individual’s autonomy, dignity, and freedom of expression(Internet Society website, 2015).” It is true that the locations, photos, and your personal information are those about one’s expression of themselves. For example, digital privacy allows people to store their secrets, their self expressions, and their real selves on the Internet. Indeed, digital privacy is kind of like a treasure chest, users are willing to put their privacy into the chest because they think that it is safe to do so. However, when they handed in their treasure chest to the Internet with their keys, some app companies, websites or electronic devices companies would grab the treasure chest and take a look at what’s inside and even sell those in order to make money.

For me, I think the benefits will outweigh the disadvantages for having algorithms and keep using it in our lives. Making racial decisions, could be one of the benefits. Like what is being discussed in the article(Rainie & Anderson, 2017), unlike human decisions, mixing with fault thinking and emotional thoughts, algorithms provided great decisions which had been calculated thousands of times. Those perfect decisions could make our life better. Also, I agree with point that the connectivity the algorithms brought to our lives(Rainie & Anderson, 2017). With suggestions the tv or websites provide to you, siri helping you to set up the clock(which could also benefits for the people with disabilities) and robots waiters serving dishes for you in the restaurants, our lives could be more convenience and more people could be benefits from it.

One thing that surprised me in the learning this week could be the point that I did not think of how serious the digital privacy had been collected and sold. But I’ve also learned some ways to prevent this from happening. It is great for me to read the two articles from NPRNews((Wamsley, 2020)&(NPR, 2016)), knowing that privacy collecting is happening and we should really do something to protect ourselves. It is also fun to know the pros and cons of how the algorithms people think of and really dig in to it in different themes(Rainie & Anderson, 2017).

An Oxford study found that IOS apps were worse for privacy than Androids. In this article, Wagensile reported that a lot of studies and Oxford’s study about the privacy safety revealed that IOS apps aimed for using privacy to make profits. Although it is hard to believe how much user privacy the IOS apps are collecting, it is true that the companies were letting those app publishers collect data such as locations, cameras, IDs or even children’s information. It is terrible for them to do that but it is the truth that privacy indeed helps to make a lot of money nowadays.
