What Will the Next Conservative Leader Need to Do for me to Vote Tory Again?

The Sunday Scrum @sundayscrum panel was discussing the next Conservative Party leader this week. So I asked myself, what would a Conservative leader have to do to convince me to vote Tory again?

Back when I was a young voter, there was a great debate over how Canada was going to handle the issue of abortion rights. The courts struck down the abortion law in 1988 and the Progressive Conservative government of the day tried to pass a bill that would allow for abortion in certain circumstances, but wouldn’t allow “Abortion on Demand.”

I’m ashamed to admit that I spent some amount of time in the 80s trying to be “Pro-Life” but then abandoned that ideology when I discovered how hurtful and damaging it was.

Statutory limitations on abortion make no sense in Canada. The abortion procedure can be handled quite easily through standard medical ethics. The “Pro-Life” movement has tried to use late-term abortions as a way of ginning up their base. Some American States have passed late-term bans that would prevent a woman from having an abortion even when the fetus is dead.

In Canada, there is no financial incentive for any doctor to perform an abortion on a viable fetus in the 8th month, which would prompt me to ask if there is even one example of such a procedure in Canada in the last decade?

I became a Conservative back in the 80s in part because of my aversion to governments passing laws to fix problems that don’t exist. In Canada, we don’t have a statute that regulates when and where an appendectomy can occur. If a patient needs an appendectomy as diagnosed by a competent medical authority, then they get one as covered by our public health system.
