Playing with the fairies in the garden

How adult play can help you reconnect with wonder and build wellbeing

In this story, I will share how imaginative play with miniature fairies has helped me rediscover wonder and impacted my wellbeing in a positive way.

Just weeks before my birthday, my beloved, who is a web-developer, gave me my gift: an e-commerce shop.

‘Lisa, I want to make you a dropshipping store, what would you like to sell?’ I thought about it for a while and then said,

‘I want a fairy store.’

Now, you might ask, why did I choose to open a fairy store? It is not an obvious money-spinner, I confess. It is a small niche market and comes into fashion every couple of years. The truth is that my decision was driven by my lifelong love of fairies. As I child, I wrote and illustrated stories about them. Fairies were an expression of the wonder and awe I experienced when outdoors. Gradually, I learned to conceal this interest from others. Why? Well, on a number of occasions, I was made to feel embarrassed when people, including other artists, judged it as ‘childish’ and ‘fanciful.’

Now, upon reflection, my partner’s thoughtful gift came at the most perfect time. I had been labouring away at my business and other creative ventures for several years. While I was proud of my growth both personally and professionally, there were times when my creative work felt like drudgery.
