The Jazz are not Championship Contenders and here is Why

The Utah Jazz currently have the best record in the NBA and yet no one is taking them as a serious championship threat. Why is that?

Years ago I falsely predicted Donovan Mitchell becoming a superstar.

I was wrong about that, but it is clear that Mitchell has improved since then. Even with the improvement, most would categorize Mitchell as a star, not superstar.

I know a lot of people have different definitions of what they consider a superstar to be. I actually briefly went over the term superstar in this article here:

Just to reiterate my definition, a superstar is someone that you can build a team around that can put you in contention for a championship. Donovan Mitchell does not fit into this category.

A lot of people have ranked the Clippers and Lakers a hell of a lot higher than the Jazz as far as championship contention is concerned. The reason being is that those teams have at least one superstar.

I can’t call you a superstar if you’ve never led your team past the second round, which Mitchell hasn’t.

A superstar is normally the thing that helps a team get over the hump, until Mitchell proves that he is of this status, the Jazz will never take that leap.

I think Rudy Gobert gets a little too much backlash, but it is plain to see that he is not exactly what one would define as offensively gifted.

He doesn’t really have much of a post game. Most of his offense comes from lobs and offensive rebounds.

Gobert’s career high scoring average is about 16 points per game, he averages about 12 points per game for his career, and this year he’s averaging about 14 points per game.

Gobert’s true value stems from what he does on the defensive end, as he is a front runner for his 3rd Defensive Player of the Year Award this year.

Name how many title contenders all time have had their second best player best offensive attribute be catching lobs.

I’ll wait.

Kind of hard, right?

It’s pretty simple if the Jazz want to win a championship Mitchell has to take that next step to becoming a superstar, and they need a much more reliable secondary offensive option.
