Life Skills Is More Than Academics

We should be able to more than wing it in life

I grew up a privileged Indian kid whose only responsibility was to get straight A’s. I aced that responsibility. The cherry on the top was apparent smartness and a love for reading.

I could have gotten away with murder, maybe.

My working parents kept their expectations of me to my academics. They were and are extremely proud of me. I was the poster child of my family and extended family.

All my cousins love me but had to fight the shadow of my so-called smartness.

We are all doing good and we all have our individual struggles and challenges. The A’s, B’s, and even the F’s are irrelevant as adults.

I believed I could cook when need raised and take care of a household if need be. If I could ace my studies, how hard can it be to cook and take care of a home? Every woman does it.

My parents must have had the same notion.

We were all wrong, and how!!!

I got married and got a taste of reality.

The husband, me, a new home, and a spate of “running-a-home” debacles ensued.

It was when I started adulting that I realized my A’s are good between 9 am-5 pm, beyond that I had a whole lot of learning to do.

This is a common thread I have seen, discussed, and observed.

Growing up my only responsibility was to keep my tiny little wardrobe organized. This meant I had to keep my washed and ironed clothes in its proper place. I dumped them inside the wardrobe.

I got away with it, thanks to my A’s.

Moving into my own home with “stuff” that encompasses far more than clothes and shoes made me feel like Alice In Wonderland.
