I still remember that in some science fiction movies, driverless vehicles always attract everyone’s attention.Imagining cars no longer needs a driver, and you can sit in the back seat to enjoy the time with your family or enjoy the spectacular scenery along the way.How about a taxi shows up without diver? Isn’t this a fascinating thing? In the driverless industry has boomed, many companies have invested a lot of money and time in this field.On the other hand, this technology has also affected the marketing strategy of the taxi, for example, uber is the first company which brings the technology of autonomous vehicles and concepts to the industry. On RIC, Ford’s CEO Mark Fields (2016)states “In 2021, the driver is not going to be required”(Ford Targets Fully Autonomous Vehicle For Ride Sharing In 2021,2016). Furthermore, In 2018, Singapore based company NuTonomya has also launched autonomous vehicles in the taxi market which provided a trial service. There is no doubt, technology is changing the way how people live and building a new surrounding, and these early adopters have brought a significant impact on our lives.

Mark Fields, is a CEO and president of Ford who is the first early adopter of autonomous vehicles. In 2016, he announced that Ford dedicates to accomplishing a large number of driverless cars in 2021; also, Ford also corporates with four car development for investing in building a fully self-driving car environment within three years. (Calif,2016). Not only does Ford boost the safety issue, but also addresses the difficulty of society and environment because Ford is aiming at the robotic car can be widespread on the road(Calif,2016).

The more I dug into the autonomous vehicles process of Ford, the more surprise I feel. Why? Ford has the perception of knowing what the potential trend is. Based on the trends I have learned of trends so far, I thought the observation would be a detailed description, but after did my research of Ford, I gained my knowledge of trends again. There are many phases of the development which what I have learned from project management. For instance, Ford has been dedicating in autonomous vehicles more then than a decade. Sensor, software, 3D mapping, camera and so on, all of these testing delivered to a high-end product.

Indeed, Ford has led vehicles to an advanced level, and the feature of autonomous also contributes to society.

Robotic Taxi

Karl Lagnemma is the president of nuTonomy, was called the most compelling founder. He possesses numerous patents, also his concept and study have affected most technology industry. In 2017, he established nuTonomy which is autonomous cars and mobile (nuTonomy,n,d). I’m amazed that nuTonomy is ahead of taxis time, for instance, Uber often be associated thought that the most innovated strategy in the technology industry, whereas nuTonomy’s feature is far beyond other competitors. Why did I say that? According to my research, nuTonomy has recently established a free trial program in Singapore, and collaborate with Renault and Mitsubishi. On the other hand, nuTonomy’s concept is that people will be able to rent a robotic car or order an autonomous in Singapore.

What appeals to me is the concept from Karl which innovates and changes our surroundings. Here are my reasons

1. Karl uses his expertise of robot applied to nuTonomy. For instance, mapping, localization and decision making. Mainly, decision making is the most incredible feature for me because i never expected that robot or technology would be able to make decisions for humans(nuTonomy,n,d).

2. nuTonomy has generated a new trend in robot industry which has a significant impact on Uber and Lyft, and this is what I’m going to talk.

Travis Kalanick

Since nuTonomy has a momentous change for vehicle market, Uber also announced and caught this trend of a self-driving car. Travis is the CEO of Uber; he also mentioned that Uber provides a free trial of driverless. I think this is how trends arise because technically nuTonomy was the first former company which tested rental car on the road. On top of that, Uber also collaborates with Volvo in this summer(Mai,2016).

I would say that trends and observation are intriguing because they affect and advance our lives, and I do believe that autonomous vehicles are definitely not a fad.
